The city’s official population is 32,199, up 24.5% from 2016. Cochrane was recorded as the 11th fastest growing municipality in the country.
“The growth rate reflects the challenges the municipality has faced as it continues to meet the increased needs of a rapidly growing population,” read a city press release about the census data.
“While striving for planned and managed growth, the council and administration continue to lay the foundation to serve the residents of today, as well as plan for the residents of tomorrow.
Overall, Alberta grew by 4.8% and Canada by 5.2% over the same 2016-2021 period. Calgary rose 5.5%, a noticeable slowdown.
Growth-related issues, particularly traffic, continue to frequently affect the lives of Cochran residents.
A notable positive element has been the increase in local commercial supply over the past five, 10 or 20 years. The range of small and large retail businesses, food and beverage establishments, recreation and services currently available to Cochranites necessitates the population base.
“Realtors, merchants, retail stores – they all see the impacts of new customers,” reads a quote in Mayor Jeff Genung’s statement.
“Cochrane’s economic recovery is well underway, as this growth is driving growth in the local economy. »
